Happy Friends: Modes of Activism (imports/exports)

For the next meeting of Happy Friends Reading Club we will shift to an alternative procedure, discussing a number of papers collected at the CONFERENCE ON MODES OF ACTIVISM AND ENGAGEMENT IN THE CHINESE PUBLIC SPHERE (26-27 APRIL 2012 at the National University of Singapore).
Although the 5 texts chosen from the 5 panels at the conference will be made available to those interested, we will ask several among the Happy Friends to read carefully with a view to presenting the basic points of the papers at the meeting. This method is chosen to get a cross-section of the discussions at the conference, and perhaps of some sort of “current state” of activist practices in China.
There will also be a brief discussion reviewing the art and activist positions at East Asia Multitudes Meeting held at Occupy Central in Hong Kong, where two members of HomeShop had been present.
The meeting is scheduled for 6pm on May 27th, 2012 at HomeShop.

There are supposedly two areas in which you can know you’ve mastered a foreign language: 1) being able to speak in the language of love and 2), being able to verbally put up a fight. The first is private and intimate, a heart to heart where language is necessary but perhaps not the most important, nor possible to practice in a group setting. The latter is a public, sharply dialectical, either you or me head-to-head where language is very important. So why not come together at HomeShop for our COMBAT LANGUAGE playground? Learn more about culture, hot topics in China and your real fighting spirit through COMBAT LANGUAGE. Improve your vocabulary and put your logic on its toes!
Debate Two
Fossil Fuels or Renewable Energy?”
With people getting caught up in the politics of climate change, believers versus skeptics, the reality is that the source of energy that fuels industry affects both the environment and the economy. China is heavily dependent on coal burning more than half of the world’s annual consumption. China has also become to world leader in wind power capacity and solar panel manufacturing. Any way you cut it, producing energy is a highly profitable business. Burning fossil fuels is in conflict with renewable energy, so which one has the long term future in China? Get yourself ready for combat language debate!

The Life of Postmodern Tanghulu
时间 date/time__2012 年5月12日,周六下午2点起
Saturday, May 12, from 14.00
Dongcheng District, Jiaodaokou Beiertiao 8 [map]
As part of Saturday’s WaoBao! Spring Cleaning swap meet on the 12th, we’ve invited the oldest family on our block to teach us how to update a Cultural Revolution old recipe for making candied fruits on sticks, the old Beijing sweet of choice. Experiment with various ball-shaped edibles, from the classic 山楂 hawthorn to the risky 狮子头 lion’s head minced meatball. Bring your leftovers from the fridge to tanghulu-ify, or trade for our finished pieces! All will be available for trade and bargaining along with all the other goodies on site.
传说_The legend of tanghulu
During the splendid reign of the Southern Song dynasty, the favourite concubine of emperor SONG Guangzong fell ill and could not eat, making her emaciated and haggard. Imperial doctors tried all sorts of expensive cures to no avail, so SONG put forth an open call seeking medical help. One traveling doctor managed to enter the court to see the concubine, and after taking her pulse, he prescribed her a cure of hawthorn and brown sugar to be cooked together and eaten. Half a month later the concubine was healed, and ever since then, the recipe became a favourite of the people. Sour and crisp yet fragrantly sweet, this miracle method of preparing hawthorn has lasted until today.
About the SONG family
Before the founding of the People’s Republic, the SONG family of Jiaodaokou Beiertiao 1 was already involved in a small homemade tanghulu workshop for several years. With private businesses suspended during the Cultural Revolution, they stopped until finally during the reform and opening-up of the 80s, the family business was able to be picked up again. During its peak, the SONG’s tanghulu (including hawthorn, Chinese yam, tangerine, smoked jujube, banana and many other varieties) satisfied the cravings of many old Beijingers and were delivered all over the city to locations such as the imperial palace, Wangfujing, Dongdan and Qianmen.

On Saturday, May 12th, come and do more than get the soy sauce at HomeShop’s “WaoBao Spring Cleaning” event! The purpose of the day is for you to gather everything you’ve left covered in dust in your closet and swap these things with other people who can make new use of them! Traders should bring everything from unwanted mobile phones to clothing and bicycles on trading day, and get ready to drive hard bargains. Money is no currency on this day, just bring your stuff and prepare your sharp and sparkly bargaining tongue! In addition to swapping stuff, you can also swap your skills and services, like trading babysitting time for a day’s use of a valid license plate on the right driving day, or a home-cooked meal in exchange for website design services. As well as the trading, mini-upcycling and DIY project workshops will take place on site, and we’ll be showing a few short films about how our consumer habits have created a big trash society and the few individuals who are trying to give new life to it. Free drinks and snacks will be on offer, and one of the oldest families on the block, the SONG family, will also be on hand to teach us how to upcycle the classic tanghulu candied fruit skewer into postmodern balls on sticks, WAO!
Get off of the internet and WaoBao the clutter in your life instead! Starting May 5th, we’ll begin accepting donated must-haves to develop a stockpile of treasures, so for those of you with the bounty and not the space but the desire to see things loved a second time, please drop by HomeShop during opening hours to bring items and get tickets redeemable for trade on Spring Cleaning Day. (You can also bring your stuff directly on the 12th!)

Happy Friends: Speculative Realism

Last meeting in discussing the anthropological features of humans (bio-historical linguistic disoriented animal whose innovativeness is what endows it for acts of “evil”) we stumbled, again, on the possibility to assign human nature. One person claimed this is always a problem, as the definition can never be made outside of the time in which it is stated. Truism?
But this does lead to speculations about what is possible to know.
Recently, some mention has been made of time here and there. Questions about objects (as they exist in time? as they exist beyond the grasp of our consciousness, precede and outlast us) shift the discussion to a place some of us are not really familiar with. Can this metaphysics be a detour to another time for us?
For next meeting, the text “On the Undermining of Objects: Grant, Bruno, and Radical Philosophy” by Graham Harman, is proposed. (p. 21–40 in the attached PDF “The Speculative Turn: Continental Materialism and Realism,” 2010)
The meeting is scheduled at HomeShop on May 13th at 6pm.

HomeShop began as a storefront residence and artist initiative in Beijing, 2008. Located in the centre of Beijing on one of its old hutong alleyways, the space and its window front are used as the beginning points from which to examine ways of relaying between public and private, the commercial and pure exchange as such. Artists, designers and thinkers come together via multiple, interwoven series of small-scale activities, interventions and documentary gestures, processes by which HomeShop serves as an open platform to question existing models of economic and artistic production. Daily life, work and the community become explorations of micropolitical possibility, and of working together.
HomeShop was initiated in 2008 by Elaine W. HO and has since 2010 been a work-in-progress by Michael EDDY, 何颖雅 Elaine W. HO, Fotini LAZARIDOU-HATZIGOGA, 欧阳潇 OUYANG Xiao,
Cici WANG.
WEAR, the journal of HomeShop
WEAR is the independently published journal of HomeShop. Combining an artist book, theoretical reader and social research in printed form, the journal documents the public activities, discussions and interventions organised at HomeShop, while serving as a broader platform from which to gather contributions from artists, writers and the folks in the neighbourhood for a local dialogue and everyday reflection upon the contradictions and dynamism of a fast-changing China.

This issue and the second season of HomeShop are marked by a more cynical bent, whereby the pointedness of quotation marks, as in "cultural exchange", invite investigation into the deeper multiplicities and ambivalence hidden within this overwrought term. Continuing its documentation of daily life in the hutong, WEAR number two intertwines HomeShop's series of exercises in cultural exchange with commentary, imagery and special projects on the topic by contributors such as Carol Yinghua LU, RAQS Media Collective, Meiya LIN and Michael EDDY. A special 28-page insert has also been created especially for the journal by artist Reinaart VANHOE.

In part a documentation of a series of public activities, discussions and interventions organised at HomeShop space during the 2008 Olympic Games, WEAR journal number one also serves as a broader platform to invite other artists, writers and contributors to reflect upon—from the point of view of a small alleyway in the centre of Beijing—a spectacular everyday in our contemporary urban condition.

Happy Friends Reading Club is an ongoing, fluctuating body of texts and their readers, organized in various locations with different people since 2004.
Since 2010,
Happy Friends Reading Club has been based at HomeShop, and meeting with variable regularity to discuss readings on aesthetics, politics, and philosophy. It is open for anyone to join (though currently it happens mostly in English), and participants decide the course of articles.
The reading club is regarded as a practice and as a conversation as opposed to a project, though it at times connects to other projects. The question of success or failure as it pertains to projects therefore only stands as relevant insofar as one's definition of what is desired from texts: information, self-education, debate, friendship?
All valid.

The
Country Fair is a farmers' market started by a group of volunteers—Beijing consumers—who are interested in supporting sustainable agriculture and rural-urban mutual aid. We wanted to create a platform for exchange and education and a space to buy safe, healthy food. We support farmers who are already growing organic, and encourage other farmers who might be interested in making the transition. Currently,
Country Fair also functions as a farmers' communication and skill exchange platform between local and international farmers. We've been holding markets as often as we can since September 2010. Since the beginning, members of HomeShop have been contributing to the elements of artistic production, workshops and producing food.

A project for
A Museum That is Not,
Times Museum, Guangzhou, 2011
The YellowSide Daily is the new newspaper for HuangBian, the district in northern Guangzhou surrounding the Times Museum. But as a predictive newspaper, it is also unique in the media landscape, as it reveals tomorrow's stories today. The crucial difference is in
The YellowSide Daily's true commitment to the news: a newspaper that does not only wait for it to happen, but ensures that it does.
Working with a dedicated team of predictive journalists recruited from among the Times Museum's volunteer corps and members of the public, HomeShop oversaw an editorial process locating HuangBian's future stories. Working around the clock with last-minute predictive adjustments, the inaugural edition of
The YellowSide Daily (dated 9 October 2011), appeared in a print run of 4000 copies on October 7th. The newspapers were distributed by hand and door-to-door around the community in the morning of October the 8th, and finally the fateful news day—October 9th—arrived. The articles from the newspaper then happened just as had been written (in cooperation with
The YellowSide Daily team, volunteer reporters and the well-informed public).
Among the day's features:
 |
The inauguration of HuangBian as a new International Art District, with a ceremony presided over by world-reknown architect Rem Koolhaas. A tour also took place, introducing the public to the district's many invaluable modern art masterpieces by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Damien Hirst, Robert Barry, and many more. |
 |
The launch of a "civilized moto-taxi" initiative to complement the city's "Civilized Guangzhou" campaign; |
 |
Weather reports of scattered seed showers throughout the day; |
 |
A pop-up basketball workshop for children of migrant workers run by a professional basketball player; |
 |
And much, much more. |
Residents exclaimed, "Oh, a newspaper for HuangBian?!" and sometimes, "So, this will come out every day?" The future of such a question can only be determined by the residents of HuangBian themselves.

BEIERTIAO LEAKS
READ MORE
Beiertiao Leaks is HomeShop's slow local newspaper, produced periodically with our in-house silk-screen facilities and with the help of many contributors. It is a medium for investigating the local: this could include the neighborhood, friends from across town, and more extended networks, and it must account for both the everyday rhythms and the mediated temporal warping that affect these today.
 |
|
23 December 2010—The first edition of Beiertiao Leaks coincided with the re-opening of HomeShop at Jiaodaokou Beiertiao hutong. The day was a continuous process of reporting, editing and laying out, and by night time, was to be printed and distributed on site (whether this schedule was strictly achieved is up to your imagination).

23 May 2011—The second edition of Beiertiao Leaks was published as part of the Continental Drift project's journey from Beijing to Wuhan and Lijiang. This edition of the newspaper acted like a catalyst for looking together at the immediate territory and our roles within it, whereby cross-examinations of neighbours, parallel practitioners and friends made for the day's late breaking journalism.

HomeShop branch; Beijing, 2010
|
After a prolonged research and analysis period highly implicated by HomeShop's 2010 search for a new space, our newfound expertise led to the temporary return of the current space at
Xiaojingchang hutong to its former status as real estate agency (pre-2007 era). Replicating the typology of Beijing's countless real estate agencies, HomeShop took up a new role as an off-shoot office of the well-known chain
Wo Ai Wo Jia ("I Love My Home"), henceforth named
Wo Ai Ni Jia ("I Love Your Home"). For a period of two months in the Spring/Summer of 2010, "我爱你家 I Love Your Home" presented information on over thirty of Beijing's hottest properties, with its multilingual agents advising passersby on the real estate market and private life in the capital—free of commission.
Broadening our market and horizons, in December 2010 "我爱你家 I Love Your Home" expanded to the Caochangdi village-cum-arts district, where the pop-up real estate agency was transformed into an art display, complete with framed photographs and a video installed in a white cube space.
A video interview with SUN Ning, owner of Platform China art space and manager of several properties in the area, recounts her history and views of the Caochangdi arts district, from its beginnings as a dusty village on the outskirts of the city to its current status as a trendy off-site for 798 aficionados, cheap lodging for
beipiao (Beijing's young, precarious population) and home to migrant workers.
Further fieldwork contributed to a selection of Caochangdi's most recent available properties (from warehouse and gallery spaces to 12 sq m rooms without heating), along with the full information regarding particular details unique to each space, their layout, size and telephone contact for renting each space.

BALLSY is a series marked by motions, reflective processes and attempts at understanding what it really means to "go beyond". While this series took on the more scattered trajectories befitting our transition from the original location at
Xiaojingchang Hutong to the new home near
Beixinqiao, BALLSY has become more than a play on words—a mysterious throwing

The second season of HomeShop was marked by a more cynical bent, whereby the pointedness of quotation marks, as in "cultural exchange", invited investigation into the deeper multiplicities and ambivalencies hidden within this overwrought term.
Continuing its documentation of daily life in the hutong, HomeShop's series of minor practices sought to engage different forms of community, along with local and global forms of social critique, within a meta-processing of exchange itself.

HomeShop initiated its first project series in August of 2008 during the Beijing Summer Olympics. For the Games 2008 series, the framework of Beijing and the Olympic games was used as a grid from which to allow indeterminacies to converge and reappear―a way of building common spaces from the urban environment and community practice. Located in a small hutong near the Gulou area of the city, each day of the Olympics marked a countdown to the events' end, as opposed to the nation-wide arousal of public displays of the countdown to 08.08.08. Varying scales of activities took place, from field recordings to a party in honour of the "losers", from street-side viewings of the Games to impromptu stoop-front discussions with a neighbour. A secondhand clothing collection station invited curious passersby to come in and interact with the space, and free giveaways from participating artists Liang Yue ("Relax" posters) and Sean Smith (a Wii video game race to win Olympic event tickets) aimed at offering, within the daily routes of local residents, a minor-scale potentiality for our ways of engaging with the community and public space.
