“无形” non-visible videostills

non-visible
a project by Asako Iwama and Derrick Wang
June 21-23
家作坊 HomeShop

The “non-visible” project has evolved from a series of video interviews with various practitioners in Europe and China with experiences or familiarity working with non-visible energy, or ‘qi’. Interviewees have included dancers, cognitive scientists, Feng Shui and I Ching masters, psychics, traditional medicine doctors and physicists.

How can the non-visible be made visible and/or comprehensible? We would suggest that we are constantly swinging between the two poles of subjective and objective reality. Through the process of our interviews, we have attempted to find points of connection between the various practices we have encountered, while acknowledging our own groundlessness in terms of having to constantly transform our perceptions and expectations of the people we have met.

In a film installation and series of events organized during the June solstice and under the full moon (June 21-23), we hope that some of the hidden layers contained in our interactions and recordings will become visible to or felt by those who participate, and that a new understanding of the non-visible may emerge.

Asako Iwama (born in Tokyo, Japan) is an artist and cook, who lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Asako Iwama’s practice has developed around the idea of the ontology of eating. Referring to the social aspects of eating as a metaphor of our relation to nature, Iwama seeks to transform the perception of nourishment, both aesthetically and epistemologically within her practice and work.

Derrick Wang (born in Montreal, Canada) is a second generation Chinese from Canada who has a background in architecture, and is currently working as a filmmaker in Beijing, China.

High Mountain, Flowing Water by ZHAO Tianji

HomeShop recently participated in the exhibition Green Box - Remapping — The Space of Media Reality (organized by School of Intermedia Art of China Art Academy at Media City Research Center 11–29 January, 2013) with a just-in-time newspaper about the other works in the show, silkscreen-printed on-site in the exhibition space.

For the past two years, HomeShop has been investigating the ins and outs of publicness and locality through the form of newspapers, including The YellowSide Daily and Beiertiao Leaks. The intention has been to form a multi-vocal space of statement through a medium of urgency. The newspapers’ deadline forces a certain immediacy of content, in both time and place.

Greenbox Leaks is a followup on these exercises in the performance of journalism, turned toward the exploration of the context of the group exhibition in which it will appear. A team dispatched from HomeShop will document, annotate and critique the contributions by all other participants in the show, gathering meta-data, truth & rumour, and subjective interpretation into a special behind-the-scenes critical feuilleton to be printed in red ink and available for the opening. In some cases, the other participants will be offered the choice to self-critique instead of having their work subjected to the treatment of Greenbox Leaks team. Finally, our editorial comprises a self-criticism that not only infiltrates the boundaries inherent to our own undertaking, but also problematizes all future criticisms around the exhibition as a whole.

Printing past the deadline at the opening.

Fellow artist in Green Box, Liu Guoqiang, takes his criticism with admirable humour.

The presentation also included previous editions of Beiertiao Leaks, YellowSide Daily, and 《穿》Wear journals (now available in Hangzhou while supplies last!).

Counting the hot cakes profits (1 yuan x 66 copies sold = 66 yuan!)

About Calendar Restaurant__

Calendar Restaurant is a restaurant that opens once every month during the course of the farming season. It was initiated within the context of an art project from July to October, 2010. When farming started in 2011, we simply wanted to explore this practice within the framework of daily life and timeline of vegetables’ growth (that is where the calendar originates). In this restaurant, customers become cooks, working with fresh vegetables from our garden and sharing stories of their experiences. Once food is ready we sit together at one big table to discuss complex food issues: health, food safety, social systems, politics, weather, Chinese medicine, old Beijing cooking, food design and preservation ― but not to the point of making the taste muddy! This year our farm plot is supported by Runtian Farm and the restaurant is supported by HomeShop.

“Mural Project” curator & “Lijiang Studio Mural Stories” compiler: Li Lisha
Lijiang Studio “New Countryside Laboratory“ director: Jay Brown

This book is a thorough documentation of one art project that Lijiang Studio, a not-for-profit arts organization, did in a Naxi village near the tourist city of Lijiang. It tells the story of local farmers and artists collaborating to paint murals. It is an attempt to probe the possibilities of creating contemporary art in a rural area.

New Countryside Laboratory Mural Project
The “Mural Painting Project” run by Lijiang Studio in 2008 aims to get involved in building the Chinese “New Countryside” (xin nongcun jianshe). The “New Countryside” is a term that has come up in recent years to describe the new status of rural China in the context of urban China. In our experience the specific application of the term varies greatly.

Lijiang Studio
Lijiang Studio has been making experiments relating to art and village life in this Jixiang (meaning “auspicious”) village near Lijiang, in Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, since 2005. We run an artist-in-residence program with the aim of making art that is as interesting to the visiting artist as it is to local people as it is to us. We have indulged in this in a strictly not-for-profit way. If you have any ideas you think would be interesting in our context, please contact us at lsirlisa@gmail.com.

WaoBao! What is WaoBao! ?

HomeShop is again hosting our big Beijing swap meet. The purpose of the day is for you to gather everything you’ve left covered in dust in your closet and swap these things with other people who can make new use of them! Traders should bring everything from unwanted mobile phones to clothing and bicycles, and get ready to drive hard bargains. Money is no currency on this day, just bring your stuff and prepare your sharp and sparkly bargaining tongue! In addition to swapping stuff, you can also swap your skills and services, like trading babysitting time for a day’s use of a valid license plate on the right driving day, or a home-cooked meal in exchange for website design services.

Enjoy our “fair-trade” cakes and drinks from other swappers, and while you’re here, view and cast your votes for the design of a new seed exchange container, watch a few short films about how our consumer habits have created a big trash society and the few individuals who are trying to give new life to it.  WaoBao! No. Two will also feature guest lectures and workshops to introduce other fresh ideas about the cycles of waste, reuse and agriculture that you can “re-cycle” at home! See the schedule as follows:

  • 14:30__talk by Dr. Tony Fuller (adjunct professor, China Agricultural University) on recent agricultural practices in Yunnan
  • 15:30__workshop and demonstration of hydroponic gardening with plastic bottles
  • 16:30__workshop and demonstration on worm composting with mini-worm kits available for trading
  • 17:00__workshop to make upcycled toys from used clothing and fabrics
  • 18:00__WaoBao! auction of the super goodies with super auctioneer SHEN Bao
  • 18:00__WaoBao!

Get off of the internet, and WaoBao the clutter in your life instead! We’re already accepting donated must-haves to develop a stockpile of treasures, so for those of you with the bounty and not the space but the desire to see things loved a second time, please drop by HomeShop during opening hours to bring items and get tickets redeemable for trade at the swap meet. (You can also bring your stuff directly on the 14th!)
