WEAR journal finally arrives to its third issue in spartan outfit: double-pleated, DIY and pretty much naked. Following the first two issues’ design of a coverless magazine about urban dress, this issue thinks about the fashionable phrase “你有种 nǐ yŏu zhŏng” in a few of the other realms where HomeShop likes to dwell: critical theory, micropolitics and artistic production. “有种 yŏu zhŏng“—literally meaning “to have seed” and metaphorically insinuating that one is ballsy or daring—becomes here more than a launchpad for a series of rolling activities (like seed bombing or urban exploring); it is also the point of potential from which the likes of a film critic, organic market organizers and artist-activists engage in a context-specific dialogue on the global realities at play in China.

The CD was composed of American commercial rap and r&b sped up and seamlessly mixed into one-hour mp3’s. He used this pulsing and unrelenting rhythm to fuel his wild progress, despite the near opacity of the lyrics to his ears. Young and tidy, with glistening hair and a craggy cheek surface formed of the new sustenance, he was an image of youth, an animation of the performance of youth under pressures. We climbed in and with the door’s closure, an easygoing promise of timely delivery and an immediate u-turn in front of an oncoming bus set a tone for a sequence of negotiations and split-second decisions informed by flowing intuition. This pointed awareness did not count the law chiefly as its limit, working along its approximate guidelines, but hovering in a parallel state where speed and safety are blurry, immeasurable energies constituting pure duration. Looking at the license on the dashboard, one noted an older, pale, balding man gazing back; the spirit and attitude of driving had either rejuvenated an adult, or made an adult of a boy. The maneuvers, which included burst-passing on the narrow 2-lane causeways that elegantly cross-hatch the edges of East Lake, cutting corners early shadowing mini-vans, and swerving around piles of debris, not to mention hurtling past other speeding cars on the new elevated freeways, all made up a language of an urban space that sprang up and lay half-destroyed and half-in-progress. As such, it was not the code of a single person, though he is the atomic driver in an incalculable system of circulation and friction; but he can only be the atom in tension with the particles exploding around him. Even the pedestrian on the rubble margin senses the shifting values and instant momentum transformations, adjusting to this general spatial intelligence with minimal violence; the other drivers play variations on each other’s motions, together developing the chaotic vocabulary that oscillates between efficiency and entropy, creating such tropes as the cautioning head-lamp flicker and the selfish congesting lane-take. Just like the tireless and carnal mp3 soundtrack accompanying the sequence to its end, these signifying gestures don’t accumulate toward a thesis, but in their isolation gradually chip away at time, leaving us dizzy and early, present, in front of the Hankou train station. There are no straight roads, and in Wuhan, the atomic driver must hustle space with the will of an unstable citizen.

Country Fair is an ongoing educational endeavor, both a farmers’ market and a series of projects and lectures related to urban agriculture. It was developed out of the need to connect natural/organic farmers and consumers in Beijing.  Many farmers have an oversupply of produce, yet few consumers know how to begin a more natural way of eating.  The Country Fair serves as a platform for to learn about responsible urban practices and to demonstrate how the market works in Beijing: understanding distribution and consumption patterns will support farmers in their future practice.

Studio-X(哥伦比亚大学建筑、规划与历史保护研究院)是本次“集市”项目的合作方。

On November 27, the Country Fair will take place at Studio-X Beijing (Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation) – a multi-purpose space to engage with the fields of urban planning and development – and will include collaborative activities to explore how locally produced food comes into the city. During the day-long event, farmers and professors will speak about the policies that shape rural agricultural practices, and participants can contribute to digital map visualizing how food circulates in the city.

“Country Fair” has been developed through the project “Mobile Garden” by Emi UEMURA and Vitamin Creative Space in Beijing.

HEY HEI… Wear journal number two is finally out! It took us a while, but we’re very happy to present to you 80 heavy duty pages featuring pessoptimist contemplations on cultural exchange and everyday life in Beijing. Weighing in at a hefty 0.9 kilos and measuring 185 x 250 x 28 mm, WEAR is our beautiful, impractical baby with places to go.

But baby has to maintain her small carbon footprint, wants to keep things slim and trim, so HomeShop is wondering if we can work out a DIY distribution with you all, dear readers? Here’s how it could go:

Anyone traveling to/from Beijing in the near future, with space to spare in their luggage allowance, can volunteer to be a distribution carrier. This means that you carry 3+ copies of WEAR to your destination and agree to bring them to a pre-arranged drop off point with one of our partners abroad (individuals and/or bookshops). Your services will entitle you to a free copy of the journal, along with other goodies that increase in indebtedness depending upon the number of copies you can carry. These goodies will include any of the services that our skills will allow, or name your heart’s desire and we’ll play a nice bargaining game.

Distribution exchange offers (examples, not limited to those below):
⁃    cotton bag made with recycled fabrics, designed by Fotini Lazaridou-Hatzigoga [4 books]
⁃    ball-shaped dinner prepared by members of Homeshop crew [4+ books]
⁃    real estate tour of Beijing, (part of the upcoming installation project at HomeShop) [4+ books]
⁃    Chinese or English lessons [5+ books]
⁃    custom website design [10+ books]

Our current stockists are located in Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Osaka, Geneva, New York and Los Angeles. If you are headed to any one of these places, or you know a nice indie shop in another city that would be interested to carry WEAR, please let us know! We’ll make all the arrangements so you won’t have to take care of any of the bureaucracy, just a simple point A to point B. More rub? Please support, get in touch.

Oh, and what is WEAR journal?

WEAR is the independently published journal of HomeShop, an artists’ initiative located in one of the hutong alleyways in the centre of Beijing. An annual project, WEAR combines an artist book, theoretical reader and social research in printed form. The journal documents the public activities, discussions and interventions organised at HomeShop, also serving as a broader platform from which to gather contributions from artists, writers and the folks in the neighbourhood for a local dialogue and everyday reflection upon the contradictions and dynamism of a fast-changing China.

Our friend Emi Uemura is doing a very nice project in Beijing now, we may just have to leave the hutong one of these days just to get into delivery range of her yummy meals. If you are in the CBD the next weeks and feel hungry, we do recommend!

[点看大图和送饭日程表 click for larger images and available dates]

as informed from Vitamin Creative Space‘s the shop, host of “Japanese bento lunch delivery Aikun“:

As you are a neighbor with your offices located in the CBD, I wanted to invite you and your colleagues to take part. Zhang Wei told me that you might also be a good person to connect to the 2×4 design office. Would you be able to spread this information around to those you know or work with in the CBD?

On each appointed day, Emi will deliver lunch boxes in special packaging across the Central Business District (CBD).
The meals are each carefully made by hand, and limited in number to 5 individuals per day.
The meals and the packaging (basket and hand-stitched cloth) are a form of extended communication space, and are intended to give the people who place orders the means and inspiration to re-use and bring their own lunches to the CBD.
Emi has found that the CBD’s eating culture could be approached in more creative and healthier ways; lunchtime can be an art space.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
